UV-visible spectrophotometer: Uses light in the ultraviolet (185–400 nm) and visible (400–700 nm) ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum.

IR spectrophotometer: Uses light in the infrared (700–15,000 nm) ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum.

In visible spectrophotometry, the absorption or transmission of a particular substance can be determined by the color observed. For example, a solution sample that absorbs light in all visible ranges (i.e., transmits none of the visible wavelengths) would theoretically appear black. On the other hand, if all visible wavelengths are transmitted (i.e., nothing is absorbed), the solution sample would appear white. If the solution sample absorbs red light (700 nm), it would appear green because green is the complementary color of red. Visible spectrophotometers, in practice, use a prism to limit a specific range of wavelengths (to filter out other wavelengths) so that a specific beam of light passes through a solution sample.
